This Topper spindle is grease lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Topper spindle suffered bearing failure from contamination in the front and rear. The rear of spindle was covered with dried coolant. Upon disassembly, we noted that the drawbar and bellevilles were extremely rusted and we believe the rotary union may have been leaking if being used. The taper was very rusted and pitted, sitting well below gauge line and had 80 microns run out. The spindle nose was equipped with an air purge, but the fitting hole was plugged and not being used. Lastly, the rear shaft roller journal was 0/-3 (iso is +2/+9) and with this bearing set up it should be around +3.5.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Topper spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the shaft taper and rear shaft journal.
- Replace bearings, bellevilles, o-rings, screws, crush rings, gripper balls, and drive pulley
- Install air purge when installing the spindle
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
