Hertlein GWS4000-11 Spindle Repair

Hertlein GWS4000-11 Spindle Repair

The Hertlein GWS4000-11 spindle is grease lubricated, pulley driven, and capable of running up to 3,500 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Hertlein GWS4000-11 spindle was sent to us for a full breakdown and evaluation.  Upon disassembly and inspection, we noted that the spindle was flooded with oil due to the worn seals.  The grease was washed out of all the bearings due to this contamination.  Lastly, the shaft was out of ISO (undersized) and the taper has 6µ runout.  No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Hertlein GWS4000-11 spindle:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
  • Customer is aware that the spindle did not fail from the shaft being out of ISO and will use the shaft and taper as is
  • Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
  • Replace rubber contact seals with Inpro Seals
  • Machine an air purge into the front cover

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
