CHALLENGE
This Quaser SKF spindle was sent in for a full breakdown and evaluation. Upon inspection, we found that the rear roller bearing failed from coolant contamination, the bearing cage was destroyed, and the rolling elements were loose in spindle. It was also noted that the rear housing cover and labyrinth was full of sticky coolant residue, probably from a leaky rotary union. Two of the threaded holes on the OD of the rear cover were unplugged, allowing contaminants to directly enter the labyrinth. Lastly, the tooling taper had some pock-marked wear and the gripper fingers (collet) were worn.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Quaser SKF spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Kiss grind tooling taper
- Put set screws in (2) open holes in rear cover
- Replace bearings, Bellevilles, gripper fingers, seals, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

It’s a fact of machining — eventually, even top-of-the-line turning machines will experience a spindle failure. Spindles endure tension, torsion, heavy loads, and speeds up to and beyond 150,000 RPM, to name a few of the standard stressors.
