Akira Seiki SV1700 Spindle Repair
The Akira Seiki SV1700 is a large vertical machining center with travel up to 66in in the x and 33in in the y axis. It comes equipped with a belt driven and grease lubricated spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this Akira Seiki SV1700 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronice it was seized unfortunately. Upon disassembly, it was found that the rear bearings had catastrophically failed from coolant contamination due to a leaky rotary union. The front bearings then failed due to debris contamination from the #3 and #4 rear bearings. We noted that the bellevilles were damaged and the sensor mount/balance ring was heavily damaged from previous balancing and will need to be replaced. Interestingly this spindle was equipped for air purge, but the holes were plugged by set screws. Lastly we measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found that the CAT 40 ID taper was out of ISO. No other critical dimensional deviations were found.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Akira Seiki SV1700 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bellevilles, and o-Rings
- Manufacture a new sensor/balance ring
- Kiss grind CAT40 ID taper
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
