Boyar Schultz H618 Spindle Repair
The Boyar Schultz H618 is a manual surface grinder. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 3,450 rpm.
Our customer sent us this Boyar Schultz H618 spindle after attempting to repair it themselves unsuccessfully. When it arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we completed a full breakdown and evaluation on this spindle. Upon inspection we noted that the bearing mounting surfaces were out of spec, causing runout of 10µ on the taper before disassembly. Once taken apart we measured 4µ taper runout on the bare shaft and 5µ runout on the front journal shoulder. The bearings were contaminated and the grease was very discolored. It was also noted that there was rub damage on the back cover and the locking nuts weren’t set in the correct place.
The following actions were performed on this Boyar Schultz H618 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
- Replace bearings, assembly screws, and o-rings
- Kiss grind taper and front shoulder
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
