The Chevalier GU-1440A is a hydrostatic grinding machine. It comes fitted with an oil lubricated and belt driven spindle that is capable of running up to 2000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Chevalier GU-1440A spindle stating that the spindle failed. Once the spindle arrived at Northland Tool we completed a full disassembly and evaluation.
This is what we found:
- Both front and rear housing nuts, threaded locking pin, and rear pulley were all loose upon arrival
- The front OD taper had slightly high run out with 4µ incoming
- The rear pulley appeared to have spun out and caused damage between the
taper OD and the pulley ID mating surfaces (Pic 1 and 2) - Rear taper OD had slightly high run out of 4µ when measured bare shaft
- Bronze bearings appear to be in good shape, but we would advise them to be
re-scraped (frost) to allow proper gap between all surfaces
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Chevalier GU-1440A spindle:
- Replace Bolts and O-rings
- Kiss Grind Pulley ID and Rear Taper OD
- Re-Scrape (Frost) Front and Rear Bronze Bearings
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
