HMC 200 Spindle Repair

This HMC 200 spindle is belt driven and capable of running up to 2,400 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This HMC 200 spindle was sent in to us for a full evaluation.  Upon disassembling the spindle, we noted that the bearings failed from the lack of lubrication and contamination.  The housing had a lot of coolant contamination inside.  We also noted that the shaft tail was very worn where something spun on the shaft and the front cover was very dented but servicable.  The shaft taper had 5-6 microns of runout, was pitted, and below the gauge line.  No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this HMC 200 spindle:

  • Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
  • Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the 50 taper and shaft tail
  • Repair front cover and drive dog damage

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
