Imperial EST Spindle Repair

The Imperial EST spindle is grease lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 3,450 rpm.

CHALLENGE

A customer sent in this Imperial EST spindle for a breakdown and full evaluation.  Upon disassembling the spindle, we noted that both the front and rear bearings were contaminated.  The oily substance contaminant was coating the bearings and the inside of the housing.  Lastly, the shaft journals were undersized and the housing was oversized.  No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Imperial EST spindle:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions
  • Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
  • Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the front and rear shaft journals
  • GPG the front and rear housings
  • Kiss grind the rear taper

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
