Johnford DMC 3100SH Spindle Repair
The Johnford DMC 3100SH is a very large CNC bridge mill. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.
Our customer called in with this spindle failure and they wanted help extending the life of their spindles. After visiting their facility to evaluate their process and machine we determined that the rear bearings were failing. The rotary union was leaking into the rear of the spindle and contaminating the rear bearing. We also noted that the taper was worn and would need a kiss grind for correction.
The following actions were performed on this Johnford DMC 3100SH spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace front bearings
- Upgrade rear bearings to sealed to eliminate contamination
- Kiss grind taper
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
