CHALLENGE

This Johnford DMC3100SH spindle was sent in for a full breakdown and evaluation. Upon disassembly, we found that the bearings felt rough and the grease was contaminated. The drawbar was stuck incoming, it had to be removed and cleaned to get force. We also noted that the gripper fingers, taper, and drive dogs were showing signs of wear. Lastly, the customer supplied a new rotary union assembly and tooling.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Johnford DMC3100SH spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, belleveilles, grippers, screws, orings, and rear shaft nut
Kiss grind the 50 taper

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
