The Jones & Shipman 1307 EIU is an older ID grinding machine. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 20,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
The bearings in this Jones & Shipman 1307 EIU ID grinding cartridge spindle were very noisy when rotated in assembly incoming, confirming what our customer indicated when sending it in. Upon disassembly we noted that the grease in both the front and rear pairs of bearings was contaminated with coolant and grinding swarf. This severe degradation of the bearing lubrication would account for our customer’s other stated observation of high heat during operation. We also noted that the quill pilot ID taper had excessive runout of 6-8µm when measured on the bare shaft. No other dimensional deviations were noted.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Jones & Shipman 1307 EIU spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts and o-rings
- Replace bearings
- Kiss grind quill pilot ID taper
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
