The Kessler 000.647.076 spindle is out of a CNC vertical machining center. This spindle is grease lubricated and stator driven capable of running up to 14,000RPM.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Kessler 000.647.076 spindle stating the spindle had an issue with the bearings. Once the spindle arrived at Northland Tool we completed a full disassembly and evaluation.
This is what we found:
- Spindle was seized prior to incoming so we were unable to test the encoder
- Rear bearing had no grease left inside of it and had a brown liquid on the outside of the seals
- Front #2 bearing catastrophically failed and contaminated the #1 bearing
- The rear nuts got heavily damaged during removal
- Front inner spacer faces were damaged from the bearing failing
- The grippers were heavily worn and need to be replaced
- Encoder was visibly worn and was covered in a brown sludge
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Kessler 000.647.076 spindle:
- Replace bolts, o-rings, Bearings, Bellevilles, Grippers, and Encoder
- Clean up the faces of the front inner spacers in machining
- Skim ID of rear locking nut, Weld new spanner holes and machine back to even
- Make a new Rear Shaft Nut
RESULT
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
