This spindle had a damaged taper that was causing run out in the tool. As you can see in the pictures below the taper was worn on the outer edge. This can be caused by low drawbar pull force, allowing the tool to lose full contact with the taper and only contact the leading edge. This causes premature wear to the taper. It also causes tooling wear so please check your tools for wear before using the newly repaired spindle with worn tooling.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent this Makino FNC80 and indicated that this spindle had high runout, tool rock, and poor part finish. Upon inspection of the spindle we found that coolant had completely washed out the grease of the front bearing quad set. We also noted that the shaft taper run out was 6-8µ and the taper was bell mouthed. Customer did not supply drawbar assembly, drive dogs, drive pulley, pulley keys, or pulley nut.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Makino FNC80 spindle:

RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
