The Milltronics ML16 is a popular CNC tool room lathe. It can come fitted with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 4,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Milltronics ML16 spindle was sent in to Northland Tool and Electronics for a full breakdown and evaluation. Once we completed the disassembly and performed a close inspection, we noted that there was severe contamination found throughout spindle. The grease found in the bearings was contaminated with fine particulate. We then measured the critical surfaces (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a couple of issues. First, the OD taper and face had high run out in both assembly and on the bare shaft. Second, the spacer in front of the rear bearings was damaged and had some high spots. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Milltronics ML16 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace all bearings, bolts, and o-rings
- Kiss grind the O.D. taper and face
- Machine the front spacer for the rear bearings in assembly to remove high spots
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
