Milltronics Partner 6 Spindle Repair

The Milltronics Partner 6 is an older CNC vertical machining center. It comes fitted with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 3,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

Our customer indicated that a dropped tool had damaged the tooling taper ID. When this Milltronics Partner 6 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we noted right away that the bearings were very noisy when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. After a successful disassembly and evaluation, we found that the bearings were loaded with an orange contaminant, more so in the rear than the front. The tooling taper ID was heavily damaged when the tool was dropped as the customer had stated. The gripper assembly was not even finger tight and the gripper balls were very worn. A previous rebuilder added a useless Listo seal by the rear bearings and had used silicone in a rear housing o-ring groove. Lastly, the drive key and brass drawbar spacer were cracked.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Milltronics Partner 6 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Manufacture and install new brass drawbar spacer
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling taper ID
Replace bearings, bellevilles, gripper balls, drive key, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
