This spindle came in seized. The #2 bearing had failed and the cage was broken. The inner bearing spacer was 14 microns shorter than the outer giving the bearings a medium preload.
These bearings at medium preload have a max speed of 9,360 RPM. The spindle was being run at 10,000 rpm causing bearing failure. We replaced the bearings, and adjusted the spacers for light preload. We then finished our repair process of adjusting the preload, balancing, assembling and breaking in the spindle. The final step is to check the spindle in our QC department.
