Our customer started having poor part finish on parts this spindle was grinding. The first signs of trouble were part chatter that eventually turned into out of specifications dimensionally. The pilot for the tooling interface had worn over time allowing movement of the quill and grinding stone. A grind plate grind of the pilot and rebuild of the spindle brought the spindle back to perfect operating parameters.
Possible cause of failure:
Customer was complaining about poor part finish. Incoming run out on pilot was 2 face/4 pilot.
Customer supplied quill measure’s 32mm -3/-15t plane 1, -4/-15t plane 2 (-15 is just in front of the thread’s).
Shaft pilot measure’s 32mm +7/+20t plane 1, +7/+20t plane 2 (+20 is at the mouth of pilot).
Bearing’s sound rough when spun by hand.
Customer requested a new power cord
Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
Replace bearings, o-rings and power cord.
Grind, chrome plate and finish grind the shaft pilot.
Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in. Final quality control inspection.
