This spindle came equipped with contact seals to prevent coolant from getting into the bearings. Over time contact seals wear down and eventually become less effective. This allows coolant and grinding swarf to get between the shaft surface and seal which accelerates the deterioration of the seal. It can also cause wear to the shaft where the seal contacts it. Eventually the coolant gets to the bearing lubrication and causes it to break down. This eventually leads to the failure of the spindle.
CHALLENGE
This Whitnon 442-1880-350 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics for a full breakdown and evaluation. Upon disassembly, we noted that the front bearings failed from contamination. The seals wore out allowing contaminants into the bearing grease. Lastly, the shaft taper was out of ISO and will need to be ground.
