Cincinnati T-35 Shaft modification to BIG-PLUS® specification
This spindle is out of a Cincinnati T-35 5-axis machining center. The spindle is oil mist lubricated and capable of 4,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
Our customer asked us to modify the shaft of this horizontal machining center spindle during the rebuild process. This manufacturer of aerospace components uses two types of dual-contact tooling: BIG–PLUS® from BIG KAISER Precision Tooling, as well as SimulFit® from Parlec. For those who are unfamiliar, BIG–PLUS® is a spindle system that provides dual contact between the spindle face and the flange face of BIG–PLUS® tooling, resulting in greatly increased tool rigidity and accuracy.
SOLUTION
As one of the earliest North American licensed and authorized BIG–PLUS® spindle rebuilders, NTE has long had the in-house micron-level grinding expertise & proprietary gauging necessary to rebuild BIG–PLUS® spindles. In this case, we took a spindle shaft that was not manufactured to use the dual-contact tooling and modified it to BIG–PLUS® specification. We have been performing this modification for our customer for a number of years, as the spindles get to the point where they require rebuild.
If you have one of the many spindles which have been designed by various machine tool OEMs to utilize BIG–PLUS® tooling, or if you wish to explore retrofitting a standard spindle, please contact the experts at Northland Tool and Electronics.
