The Cincinnati Arrow 500 is a high production CNC vertical machining center. It is equipped with a spindle capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
When this spindle was disassembled and evaluated we found that the front cover gasket had failed. This caused the bearings to fail from coolant contamination. It was noted that the gripper balls were corroded possibly from the contamination as well. The critical dimensions (bearing journals, bearing shoulders, taper, etc.) were then measured. First we noted that the shaft taper was worn and had poor tool contact. Second was that the front bearing journal shoulder had 4-5µ runout. Lastly the front and rear housing ID’s were both oversized and the front ID was worn tapered. Grinding will be needed to correct these dimensional issues.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Cincinnati Arrow 500 spindle:
- Clean all parts of the spindle
- Replace all bolts, o-rings, and bellevilles
- Replace gripper balls, nut locking washer, quad seal, and front cover gasket
- Upgrade to sealed bearings
- Grind, chrome plate & finish grind front & rear housing ID.
- Kiss grind shaft taper and front bearing journal
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
