CHALLENGE
When this Cincinnati Maxim 500 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics the first thing we noticed was that the bearings were noisy when spun by hand. After the spindle was disassembled it was determined that the bearings failed due to contamination and heavy use. The bearing spacers were measured and found to not be square, which will need to be addressed. After inspecting the bearings, we noted that the drawbar pullforce was low incoming and the grippers were very worn. Also the spanner holes on the drawbar nut were galled and would need to be corrected. After the drawbar, the spindle shaft was inspected and we found that the 50 taper was worn with low spots and the drive dogs had wear marks on them.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Cincinnati Maxim 500 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
- Grind, chrome plate and finish grind the 50 taper.
- Rework the spanner holes on the drawbar nut.
- Replace quad set and a pair of bearings
- Replace grippers, bellevilles, and orings.
- Grind spacers.
- Rework the drive dogs.
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
