Colombo RC73.22 Spindle Repair
The Colombo RC73.22 spindle is a motorized wood routing spindle. It is grease lubricated and capable of running up to 40,000 rpm.
Our customer sent in this Colombo RC73.22 spindle stating it would not release a tool. Unfortunately, the customer did not supply a tool so we were unable to test knock out incoming, but the actuator and both proximity sensors functioned properly. The spindle was also very noisy when spun by hand incoming. Upon disassembly, we noted that there was a severe failure of the rear bearings. The bearing OD’s spun in the housing causing damage. Lastly, the taper had high runout when measured bare shaft.
The following actions were performed on this Colombo RC73.22 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind (GPG) the ID taper
- GPG the 42mm rear housing
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
