Fryer TC-40H Spindle Repair

The Fryer TC-40H is a CNC horizontal machining center. It can come fitted with this grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Fryer TC-40H spindle rotated freely, but the bearings felt worn when spun by hand incoming. Once we completed a full disassembly and evaluation, we noted that the grease in the rear bearings had been washed out by coolant and flooded into the front bearings. The lack of grease from coolant contamination caused the ball cage to overheat and deteriorate. No dimensional deviations were noted on any critical surfaces.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Fryer TC-40H spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bolts, bearings, and o-rings

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

The detailed cause of failure reports and the expert technical advice that Northland Tool provides is bar none the best I have ever seen. We struggled to keep two of our large our milling spindles running for longer than 6 to 12 months. Northland Tools evaluation showed that the hydraulic nuts were not holding the assembly together causing premature spindle failure. We discussed this in detail and mutually decided to modify the spindle shaft to prevent this from occurring again. The first spindle we performed this on is still in the machine running like new after 3 years. That’s over three times the life of previous repairs and it’s still going strong.
