Haas VF-2 Spindle Repair
The Haas VF-2 is a very common vertical machining center that has been used as a workhorse in many machine shops. The spindle in this machine is belt-driven at up to 8,000 RPM, and grease lubricated.
CHALLENGE
Upon arrival to Northland Tool and Electronics, this Haas VF-2 spindle was very hard to turn by hand and drawbar force measured with low retention. After breaking the spindle down it was found that there was a catastrophic failure of the #4 radial bearing. The bearing cage was ripped apart inside and the bearing was seized, while all other bearings had very degraded grease and black particulate throughout. Inspection of the drawbar showed several broken Belleville washers throughout the stack-up and the drawbar retention clips were in very poor condition and broke apart during removal. Critical surface dimensions (bearing journals, bearing shoulders, housings, and taper) were then measured. The only dimension that measured with high runout was the CAT40 taper. All other critical dimensions were within spec and didn’t need to be addressed.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Haas VF-2 spindle repair:
- Replace all bolts, o-rings, bellevilles, and bearings
- Replace drawbar retention clips and gripper balls
- Grind-Chrome Plate-Grind(GPG) 40 Taper ID
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
