Haas VF-3 Spindle Repair

The Haas VF-3 is a larger version of its counterpart VF-1 and VF-2 machines. This spindle we repaired is a high-speed option from Haas that is belt-driven up to 15,000 RPM and has grease lubrication.

CHALLENGE

When this spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics the first thing we noticed was the spindle was difficult to turn by hand. Upon further inspection and disassembly, we found that the main cause of failure was the rear bearing having a disastrous failure. After the spindle was apart, the critical dimensions were measured (bearing journals, bearing shoulders, housings, and taper). No significant dimensional deviations were noted on any critical dimensions, however, the taper was visibly in poor condition.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed for this Haas VF-3 spindle repair:

Replace bolts and o-rings
Replace ceramic bearings
Kiss Grind the 40 ID taper
Install new drawbar assembly that was supplied by customer

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
