Hyundai Kia KH63G Spindle Repair

The Hyundai Kia KH63G is a twin pallet horizontal machining center.  It comes fitted with a grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

Customer sent us the shaft and bearings only and no drawbar supplied.  Upon inspection of what was supplied, we noted that there was a catastrophic failure of the #1 and #2 bearings. The cages were completely destroyed and contamination from these bearings reached the rear set. There was long score marks along the rear of the shaft possibly from when the shaft was removed from the machine.  We also noted fretting damage along the tail as well. We measured the critical dimensions, and found that the taper had high runout as a bare shaft and poor tool contact as well.  It was noted that there was a band of damage around the nose, therefore the customer should either send us the cover or check it to determine if it should be replaced or repaired.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Hyundai Kia KH63G spindle:

• Clean, inspect overall dimensions
• Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
• Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the 50 ID Taper and 85mm Tail journals
• Weld damaged area on nose and kiss grind to finish

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
