Ikegai TRC25Y Spindle Repair

This Ikegai TRC25Y spindle is grease lubricated and pulley driven making it capable of running up to 3,000 RPM.

CHALLENGE

Our customer sent in this Ikegai TRC25Y spindle stating that the spindle was crashed.  When it arrived at Northland Tool, we noted that the spindle was already partially disassembled.  A complete breakdown and evaluation was then performed and we recorded quite a few issues that will need to be addressed.  First, there was heavy damage to the rear of the spindle shaft and the journal for the pulley was damaged and measured severely high run out.  Second, the rear labyrinth spacer had catastrophic damage to it and cannot be used.  Third, the rear cover had rub out damage from the spacer and the rear bearing journal had heavy fretting damage.  Lastly, the front OD taper face had high run out.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Ikegki spindle:

• Clean, inspect overall dimensions
• Replace bearings, bolts, and o-rings
• Grind, plate, grind (GPG) the rear bearing journal
• GPG the pulley journal
• Kiss grind the lathe taper and face
• Repair damage to rear cover
• Manufacture replacement labyrinth spacer

RESULT

After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload, we put the spindle through a rigorous break-in and testing procedure to make sure it passes our final quality inspection.

This spindle passed our final quality inspection and was returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
