This Jones & Shipman 310 grinding spindle is grease lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 5,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Jones & Shipman 310 spindle’s bearings felt very rough when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. After disassembly, we noted that the front bearing pair contained an overabundance of clean grease, but both still feel good when rotated. The rear radial bearing grease, however, was heavily contaminated and the bearings felt very worn when rotated. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a few issues. First, the rear OD wheel taper had 6µ runout. Second, the front and rear journal shoulders had 10µm and 6µm runout respectively. No other significant dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Jones & Shipman 310 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Kiss grind the rear OD wheel taper and both bearing journal shoulders
- Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
