Kasuga Q-1500V Spindle Repair

The Kasuga Q-1500V is a large CNC vertical machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 6,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Kasuga Q-1500V spindle was seized upon arriving at Northland Tool and Electronics. After disassembling the spindle we noted that the front quad set of bearings had failed due to contamination. The grease was completely washed out and they were corroded with a couple broken cages. Interestingly our customer-supplied print indicates a rear pair of angular contact bearings, but we removed a tapered roller bearing!! We then measured all critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found some unacceptable deviations. First, the shaft and rear labyrinth cover have multiple balance marks, possibly from component balancing. Second, the taper was pock marked and had uneven tool contact. Lastly, the drawbar shaft was heavily pitted from corrosion, likely a result of a previous rotary union failure.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Kasuga Q-1500V spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Kiss grind the drawbar shaft
Kiss grind spindle shaft taper
Replace bearings, Bellevilles, crush rings, lock washers, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

The detailed cause of failure reports and the expert technical advice that Northland Tool provides is bar none the best I have ever seen. We struggled to keep two of our large our milling spindles running for longer than 6 to 12 months.
