Kessler 000.688.225 Spindle Repair

The Kessler 000.688.225 is out of a CNC vertical machining center. This spindle is oil mist lubricated and stator driven capable of running up to 18,000RPM.

CHALLENGE

Our customer sent in this Kessler 000.688.225 spindle for repair. Once the spindle arrived at Northland Tool we completed a full disassembly and evaluation.

This is what we found:

Spindle rotated freely but the bearings felt worn when spun by hand
Draw bar pulled very low force incoming at 700lbs
There was coolant contamination throughout the entire spindle (Pic 1)
Inner race of the rear bearing and shoulder of the rear housing rubbed together and caused heat damage
Rear housing was out of ISO and too loose for a tapered roller
The gripper assembly was worn
The draw bar journal was heavily worn from the springs
Front inner spacer fretted against the journal

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Kessler 000.688.225 spindle:

Replace Bolts, O-rings, Bearings, and Gripper assembly
Grind-Plate-Grind (GPG) rear 90mm housing due to deviation
GPG 18mm draw bar journal due to being severley worn
Clean up high spots on front inner spacer
Clean high spots on shoulder of rear housing

RESULT

After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

The detailed cause of failure reports and the expert technical advice that Northland Tool provides is bar none the best I have ever seen. We struggled to keep two of our large our milling spindles running for longer than 6 to 12 months. Northland Tools evaluation showed that the hydraulic nuts were not holding the assembly together causing premature spindle failure.
