DMG DMU 80 P Spindle Repair
The DMG DMU 80 P is a 5 axis CNC machining center used for high precision and high production cutting. It can come equipped with this oil mist lubricated and stator driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.
This DMG DMU 80 P spindle had bearings that felt very rough when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. The stator (field) passed all incoming electrical testing. After completing the breakdown and evaluation, we noted that the bearings felt worn when rotated by hand after removal from the shaft. The tooling taper ID was visibly worn with poor tool contact and 16µm runout. Lastly, the drive keys were severely damaged. The customer provided a replacement gripper assembly.
The following actions were performed on this DMG DMU 80 P spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Manufacture and install new drive keys
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling taper ID
- Replace all bearings, bellevilles, o-rings, and assembly screws
- Install customer supplied replacement gripper assembly
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
