The Kitamura HX250IG is a CNC horizontal machining center. It can come equipped with this grease lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 15,000RPM.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Kitamura HX250IG spindle for repair. Once the spindle arrived at Northland Tool we completed a full disassembly and evaluation.
This is what we found:
- Spindle was very difficult to rotate by hand incoming
- Draw bar had a hard time accepting a tool
- Coolant contaminated the bearings and washed the grease out of #1 and #2 bearings (Pic 1)
- #2 bearing catastrophically failed due to overheating from lack of grease
- The bearing welded itself to the shaft and caused severe damage to the journal during removal (Pic 2)
- The run out on the face of the shaft was 8µ
- Front inner spacers were damaged from having to be pressed off over the damaged journal
- Front shoulder had high run out
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Kitamura HX250IG spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bolts, o-rings, bearings, grippers, Bellevilles, and quad rings
- Grind-Plate-Grind (GPG) ID Big Plus 30 taper and kiss grind face due to high face run out
- GPG front and rear 50mm bearing journal due to #2 bearing causing severe damage
- Skim ID of front inner spacers in machining
- Kiss grind front shoulder due to high run out
RESULT
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
