The Mazak Super Quick Turn 18MS is a high production CNC turning center. The spindle we repaired here is the sub spindle in the machine. It comes grease lubricated, stator driven, and capable of running up to 5,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mazak SQT 18MS Sub spindle had bearings that were very noisy when rotated by hand in assembly incoming. After completing a full breakdown and evaluation, we noted that the front angular contact bearing pair was heavily contaminated and there was corrosion evident, the grease was black. All 3 needle bearing assemblies were in very poor condition. Lastly, the shaft face, bolt-on chuck plate, and rear bearing journal shoulder had high runout. No other significant dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mazak SQT 18MS Sub spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Kiss grind the shaft face, bolt-on chuck plate, and rear bearing journal shoulder
Replace all bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
Customer to supply OEM proprietary gaskets or gasket material

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.

The detailed cause of failure reports and the expert technical advice that Northland Tool provides is bar none the best I have ever seen. We struggled to keep two of our large our milling spindles running for longer than 6 to 12 months. Northland Tools evaluation showed that the hydraulic nuts were not holding the assembly together causing premature spindle failure.
