CHALLENGE
This Niigata SPN-40 spindle motor was sent in with the spindle to be repaired. Upon inspecting the motor, we noted that the interior of motor had significant contamination with particulate. The #1 front bearing suffered a catastrophic failure and the #2 rear bearing was worn and full of particulate. There was evidence of excessive heat on shaft, spacers, and housing. The shaft, rotor, and spacers had rub out damage as well. We also noted that the Spieth nut was galled onto the shaft and had to be machined off. Lastly, the stator (field) failed electrical testing and the encoder ring assembly was damaged with no sensor provided.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Niigata SPN-40 motor:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Rewind and reinstall stator
- Rework rub out damage to shaft, rotor, and spacers
- Replace bearings, spieth nut, encoder ring assembly, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
