Setco 4003Y Spindle Repair

Our customer runs several of these Setco 4003Y spindles and has been for decades. They are a grease lubricated and belt driven spindle that is capable of running up to 3,500 rpm. Eventually the threads for the tool holder wear out. We are able to fix this problem for them with out the cost of manufacturing a new shaft. This can be done on most spindle models and is a fairly common problem on surface grinding spindles.

CHALLENGE

This Setco 4003Y spindle was sent in for a full breakdown and evaluation. After finishing the disassembly, we noted that the bearings were severely contaminated. The shaft taper also had 4 microns of runout that will need to be addressed. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Setco 4003Y spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings, o-rings, and assembly screws
Kiss grind shaft taper

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
