SNK HF-4 NC-PKO Spindle Repair
The SNK HF-4 NC-PKO is a gantry style vertical mill that comes equipped with an oil mist lubricated and spline driven spindle capable of running up to 3,000 rpm.
This SNK HF-4 NC-PKO spindle was seized when it arrive at our facility. Upon disassembly and evaluation, it was found that the middle thrust bearing had suffered a catastrophic failure. The cage was destroyed and the bearing had to be cut from the shaft. We also noted that the middle tapered roller bearing was contaminated and had locked up. We then inspected the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a few dimensional deviations. First, the tooling taper ID and face had significant wear and impact marks and the taper ID runout was >20µ. Lastly, the tool gripper (collet) had significant wear on critical contact surfaces. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.
The following actions were performed on this SNK HF-4 NC-PKO spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling taper ID
- Replace bearings, bellevilles, tool grippers, o-rings, and assembly screws
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
