Spinner VC-560 Spindle Repair
The Spinner VC-560 is a 3-axis vertical machining center and utilizes a spindle that operates at up to 12,000 rpm and accepts a BT 40 tool holder.

CHALLENGE
Our customer reported that their Spinner VC-560 spindle was noisy and making a poor-quality finished product. The rear shaft nut was only hand-tight incoming. Upon disassembly, it was noted that the interior of the spindle was contaminated with coolant and the bearing grease was intact but discolored. The critical dimensions were then inspected and we found that the tooling taper ID was pockmarked and measured with >3µ runout. The customer supplied tool holder had play in the taper, and the holder ID runout measured 2-10µ. Gripper fingers (collet) also showed significant wear. Lastly, the customer requested an upgrade to increase speed from 12,000 rpm to 15,000 rpm max operating speed.
SOLUTION
Rebuilding this Spinner spindle required the following actions:
- Kiss grind tooling taper to smooth surface and remedy runout
- Replaced original, large-ball, ceramic bearing quad set with small-ball, ceramic quad set to achieve 15,000 rpm
- Replaced Bellevilles, grippers, drawbar lock nuts & washer, quad seals, o-rings, and assembly screws
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
