Starrag Spindle fails from coolant contamination



CHALLENGE

Possible cause of failure: Catastrophic failure of #3 & #4 bearings. Housing is fretted and grooved. Taper has 6 microns runout. Drawbar flute has 110 microns runout. Thermistor needs to be replaced. Gripper fingers are damaged. Rear of the spindle was coated with dried coolant, due to rotary union leaking.

SOLUTION

Recommended action: Clean, inspect overall dimensions. Replace bearings, grippers and thermistor and rotary union. Grind chrome plate and regrind housing. Grind chrome plate and regrind HSK taper. Grind chrome plate and regrind drawbar flute. Kiss grind face. Manufacturer a new spacer. Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in. Final quality control inspection.
