Tschudin HTG 400 Spindle Repair

The Tschudin HTG 400 is a hydrostatic grinding spindle capable of running up to 1,900 rpm.

CHALLENGE

Our customer indicated that the front seal in this hydrostatic grinding spindle was allowing oil to leak. They also told us that the wheel side of the spindle was hot to the touch during operation. We discovered that the leak was due to a groove that was worn into the front seal journal of the spindle shaft. The subsequent loss of oil was the main cause of the excessive heat, though we did also observe light rubout on the shaft OD and the ID of the bronze bearings. We found that the spindle oil was contaminated and observed debris in the bottom of the reservoir. Once any metallic contamination occurs in the oil of a hydrostatic spindle, any component wear will be accelerated.

SOLUTION

We completed a grind, chrome plate, and finish grind of the front seal journal of the spindle shaft to eliminate the leak & loss of oil. We also polished out the rubout marks on the other shaft surfaces and reworked the ID of the bronze bearings. After thoroughly cleaning all of the spindle components, we reassembled the spindle with new seals, o-rings, gasket, pulley bearings and assembly screws. We refilled the spindle with fresh oil and advised our customer to thoroughly clean the rest of the machine’s oil lubrication system to avoid recontamination of the spindle upon re-installation.

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
