Bridgeport VMC XT-1000 Spindle Repair

This Bridgeport VMC XT-1000 is a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Bridgeport VMC XT-1000 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics and the first thing we noticed was that the rear hydraulic nut was previously cut off and reinstalled. When this was done, the shaft journal was damaged and we believe this caused the rear bearings to fail due to loss of preload. The bearing grease was also beginning to discolor from coolant contamination. Upon inspection of the drawbar the three set screws used to lock the drawbar in the shaft were cut and loose inside. The gripper fingers were worn and the incoming retention force was low at 680lbs. Along with the low retention for the shaft tooling taper was worn.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Bridgeport VMC XT-1000 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Manufacture new rear hydraulic nut
Weld, grind, chrome plate, and finish grind damaged shaft journal
Light kiss grind of tooling taper to improve contact and runout
Replace bearings, bellevilles, grippers, drawbar balls, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
