Brown & Sharpe 618 Spindle Repair

CHALLENGE

Possible cause of failure:
Upon disassembly of this Brown & Sharpe 618 spindle it was found that the #1 front bearing was contaminated with grinding dust (also evident behind front shaft nut and in the labyrinth).  The critical dimensions were then measured and we discovered that the wheel taper had 4-5µ runout, the front housing ID was egged & tapered +5/+15µ (ISO is +/-6.5µ),  and the rear housing ID was previously GPG’d over a pre-existing score line.  The front shaft nut spanner holes also had minor damage that will need to be addressed.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Brown & Sharpe 618 spindle:

  • Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
  • Kiss grind wheel taper.
  • Grind, plate & regrind front and rear housing ID.
  • Rework front shaft nut spanner holes.
  • Replace bearings, gaskets & screws.

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
