Doosan Puma 700LM Tailstock Spindle Repair

The Doosan Puma 700LM is a high performance CNC turning center. This is the tailstock spindle only and is grease lubricated, belt driven, and capable of running up to 1,800 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Doosan Puma 700LM Tailstock was sent in with our customer indicating that the centers were difficult to remove and that the tailstock ID taper was damaged. The customer provided the tailstock bearings for this repair. After a full disassembly and evaluation, we found that the tailstock was seized and had a live center stuck in the ID taper. The taper was visibly worn and the live center had to be disassembled to allow disassembly of the tailstock. The rear quad bearing set in the tailstock were found to be installed incorrectly. Lastly, the actuator piston was in good condition but the extraction rod was twisted and broken. No dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Doosan Puma 700LM Tailstock spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions.
Kiss grind the tailstock ID taper
Install customer-supplied tailstock bearings
Replace live center bearings, extraction rod, seal, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
