Doosan Puma 2500 LSY Spindle Rebuild

Our customer sent us this spindle for repair because it had been crashed about a year prior and was making noise. It also developed a “flat spot” that you could feel when spinning the shaft by hand. They had just taken delivery of a new machine and had the time now to fix this spindle before it turned into a catastrophic failure.

Possible cause of failure:

Rear roller shows signs of fretting
Rear nut was loose
#1 front bearing is worn
Shaft pilot has 34 microns runout
No rear roller housing or tooling was supplied

Repair action:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bearings
Grind chrome plate and regrind shaft pilot
Adjust preload, balance, assemble and break in
Final quality control inspection

The detailed cause of failure reports and the expert technical advice that Northland Tool provides is bar none the best I have ever seen. We struggled to keep two of our large our milling spindles running for longer than 6 to 12 months. Northland Tools evaluation showed that the hydraulic nuts were not holding the assembly together causing premature spindle failure.
