Daewoo DMV 500 Spindle Repair

The Daewoo DMV 500 is a CNC vertical machining center. It comes standard with a grease lubricated and belt driven spindle capable of running up to 10,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

Our customer sent in this spindle letting us know that a failure of the spindle chiller unit had led to the spindle becoming noisy and rough. When the spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics, it was all but seized as it could be moved only slightly with force. Upon disassembly, we noted that the front bearings contained no grease and had suffered a catastrophic failure. The tooling taper ID was worn with high runout (5µm) and poor tool contact. Lastly, the gripper fingers had significant wear on the critical tool retention surfaces. No other significant dimensional deviations were noted (bearing journals/shoulders, housing bores).

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Daewoo DMV 500 spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the tooling taper ID
Replace bearings, bellevilles, grippers, o-rings, and assembly screws

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
