Johnford SVA-24 Spindle Repair
The Johnford SVA-24 is a CNC vertical machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and pulley driven spindle capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.
This Johnford SVA-24 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics completely seized. Upon disassembly we found that the rear bearings had catastrophically failed from coolant contamination. The rear of the spindle was covered with sticky coolant. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found that the taper was worn and slightly bell mouthed. No other dimensional deviations were found.
The following actions were performed on this Johnford SVA-24 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Kiss grind the taper
- Replace bellevilles, screws ,and o-rings
- Upgrade bearings with Sealed bearings
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
