The Kitamura HX-630i is a CNC horizontal machining center. It can come equipped with this oil lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000RPM.
CHALLENGE
Our customer sent in this Kitamura HX-630i spindle for repair due to the spindle failing and visible endplay. Once the spindle arrived at Northland Tool we completed a full disassembly and evaluation.
This is what we found:
- Spindle rotated freely incoming but the bearings felt worn when spun by hand
- Front bearings fretted against the housing and the shaft (Pic 2)
- Front bearings were heavily contaminated with a brown liquid from the fretting (Pic 1)
- Front bearing journal was egged
- Front housing was also egged
- ID 50 taper had high run out and measures AT Wrong on our air gauge system
- Front and rear shoulders had high run out
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Kitamura HX-630i spindle:
- Replace Bolts, O-rings, Bearings, Seals
- Grind-Plate-Grind (GPG) ID 50 taper due to high run out and bad contact
- GPG front housing due to egging
- GPG front bearing journal due to egging
- Kiss grind front and rear shoulders due to high run out
RESULT
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
