The Kitamura Mycenter 2X is a compact CNC vertical machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 8,000 rpm.
CHALLENGE
This Kitamura Mycenter 2X spindle was sent in with a broken orientation ring and the screws broken off in the low speed gear. The grippers had been removed from the tooling of the spindle. During the initial inspection of the spindle, the bearings were noisy and our test run indicated excessive noise and vibration. The front housing ID was oversized +11/+14µ (ISO is ±7.5µ) and the BT-40 tooling taper had some wear and 4-6µ runout. The drive keys and grippers were noted to have significant wear as well. Our customer supplied a new orientation ring, nut, and locking washer.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Kitamura Mycenter 2X spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Remove sheared off screws in low speed gear
- Replace bearings, grippers, drive dogs, o-rings, and assembly screws
- Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the front housing ID
- Kiss grind BT-40 tooling taper
RESULT
After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
