Komo Mach One 508 Spindle Repair
The Komo Mach One 508 is a medium sized wood router. It can come equipped with this grease lubricated, stator driven spindle that is capable of running up to 18,000 RPM.
CHALLENGE
This Komo Mach One 508 spindle rotated freely when it arrived at Northland Tool, but the bearings felt worn when spun by hand. Initial testing showed that the actuator functioned properly but the draw bar pulled low force. After we performed a disassembly and evaluation, we noted that the majority of the bellevilles were broken and the grippers were worn. That is what we believed caused the low pull force. It was also recorded that there was a heavy brown particulate contamination in the rear bearings. We then completed a dimensional evaluation and noted that the ID tooling taper had high run out and poor tool contact. The rear housing also showed signs of fretting and measured out of ISO. Lastly, the front balance ring was heavily worn.
SOLUTION
The following actions were performed on this Komo Mach One 508 spindle:
- Clean, inspect overall dimensions
- Replace bearings, bolts, o-rings, bellevilles, and grippers
- Repair balance ring
- Grind, plate, grind (GPG) the 30 ID tooling taper
- GPG the rear bearing housing
- GPG the drawbar rod
RESULT
After reassembly of all components and adjusting bearing preload, we put the spindle through a rigorous break-in and testing procedure to make sure it passes our final quality inspection.
Outgoing Motor Analyzer Summary:
This spindle passed our final quality inspection and was returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
