Komo RV 154.22 Spindle Repair

The Komo RV 154.22 is a high speed wood router spindle.  It is grease lubricated and stator driven making it capable of speeds up to 18,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

When this Komo RV 154.22 spindle arrived at Northland Tool and Electronics we completed a full breakdown and evaluation of the spindle.  Upon initial inspection, we noted that the actuator mounting housing was damage during shipment.  After disassembly we determined that the front bearings failed from wood contamination, and were fatigued from use.  The gripper fingers were worn and the taper was worn with chrome chipping out.  Lastly, the tach sensor was tested and seemed to not be functioning.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Komo RV 154.22 spindle:

• Clean, inspect overall dimensions
• Replace bearings, grippers, tach sensor, bellevilles, and o-rings
• Replace broken actuator mounting housing with a refurbished one
• Grind, plate, and finish grind the shaft 30 taper

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
