Mazak VCU-500C Spindle Repair

The Mazak VCU-500C is a 3-axis CNC vertical machining center. It comes equipped with a grease lubricated and coupling driven spindle capable of running up to 12,000 rpm.

CHALLENGE

This Mazak VCU-500C spindle spun but the bearings felt rough when spun by hand incoming. After a complete breakdown and evaluation, we noted that the inside of the housing was flooded with coolant and had washed the sealed bearings. The grippers were very worn and needed to be replaced. We then measured the critical dimensions (bearing journals, housing, taper, etc.) and found a couple deviations. First, the front housing was oversized over double ISO and will need a GPG. (ISO is ±7.5 and the housing measured +16/+20T) Lastly, the ID Taper had deep low spots and jumpy run out which will need a kiss grind to correct. No other dimensional deviations were noted for this repair.

SOLUTION

The following actions were performed on this Mazak VCU-500C spindle:

Clean, inspect overall dimensions
Replace bolts, bearings, o-rings, seal, gripper assembly, and bellevilles
Grind, chrome plate, and finish grind the front housing
Kiss grind ID Taper

RESULT

After reassembly of all components, adjusting bearing preload, and undergoing break-in and testing procedures, this spindle passed our final quality inspection before being returned to our customer with a 1-year warranty.
